CTV News Winnipeg recently reported that Glen Murray is maintaining his lead among the other candidates vying to be the next mayor of Winnipeg. On Saturday, the frontrunner stopped by a local online program to share his thoughts about the city’s most pressing issues and his plans to solve them.
Dito sa Manitoba (Filipino for ‘Here in Manitoba’) was the program that invited Murray as a guest for its special interview segment. After greeting the viewers, the candidate who previously served as Winnipeg mayor from 1998 to 2004 went on to talk about public safety and infrastructure as his top two priorities. He also outlined some measures on how to address those key issues should he win the city’s top seat again in the general municipal election on October 26.
With regard to public safety, Murray links it mainly with the methamphetamine addiction in Winnipeg.
“We have a huge problem with many Canadian cities with meth, so we need to expand our community health programs. Get more street outreach programs, get rapid programs into detox and addictions, ” he explains. “Much of our violent crime and much of our theft in the city is related to high levels of addiction and then the crime that that supports when people…are in very bad situations.”
A collaborative venture between the Filipino Music & Arts Association of Canada, Inc. (FMAACI) and Barangay Canada, Dito sa Manitoba is an informal panel discussion about the local music and arts scene, and is slated to debut alongside the unveiling of FMAACI’s new website late next week.
Pablo Herrera and Sal Baer of the editorial staff of Ethnorama News Winnipeg were also in attendance when Murray recorded the interview at Mrs. R Bakery, a Filipino-owned pastry shop in the north end of the city.
