‘Katips,‘ the award-winning film about activists during the Philippines’ Martial Law era, will be screened in select cities in Canada for the next two weeks. Tickets are available for purchase at bantaykasaysayan.com.
Written and directed by Atty. Vince Tañada, the film is based on the 2016 stage musical entitled Katips: Ang Mga Bagong Katipunero which explores the struggles of student activists protesting the imposition of Martial Law during the 1970s by then-President Ferdinand Marcos.
Katips stars Jerome Ponce, Vince Tañada, Mon Confiado, Sazchna Laparan and Nicole Laurel Asensio, with an ensemble cast that includes Dexter Doria, Lou Veloso, Johnrey Rivas, Adelle Ibarrientos and Joshua Bulot.
Initially released in November 2021, the film earned 17 nominations at the 70th Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards and bagged honours for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Tañada, Best Cinematography for Manuel Abanto, and Best Original Song.
Among the cities where Katips will be screened are Edmonton (Nov. 30), Calgary (Dec. 1), Winnipeg (Dec. 4), Vancouver (Dec. 5), Montreal (Dec. 6) and Toronto (Dec. 10).
