A province-wide volleyball tournament kicks off this weekend in Alberta, with participants from organizations representing fourteen Filipino-Canadian communities.
Eusebio Cacayuran, Jr. is the president of the Filipino Organization in the Rocky Mountains (FORM), one of the organizations spearheading the 1st G-10 Volleyball Tournament which takes place at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton from November 5 to 6. “This is the inaugural activity of our group, so we look forward to fostering closer ties and camaraderie through friendly sports competition,” says the FORM president.
Cacayuran also mentions that Consul General Zaldy Patron of the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary will be at the event which is a first of its kind for the province’s kababayan community. He also expects that officials from the three levels of government might come by to bring greetings. The official event poster is shown below.
In an online interview with Barangay Canada, Cacayuran shared a bit of history, explaining that the G-10 refers to the group of ten kababayan communities in Alberta that banded together in 2021, near the end of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. It has now grown to include communities in Airdrie, Banff, Brooks, Canmore, Camrose, Edson, Grand Prairie, Hinton, Leduc, Lethbridge, Okotoks, Spruce Grove-Stony Plain, and Wetaskiwin.
Although the group now counts 14 member-communities, Cacayuran says that the G-10 monicker is being upheld in honour of the original ten organizations.
